Abstract

Introduction: heart failure (HF) is a cardiovascular pathology caused by alterations in the structure and ventricular function of the heart, which is affected by multiple risk factors, including advanced age and comorbidities such as arterial hypertension (HTN), diabetes type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) and acute myocardial infarction (AMI).

Objective: to determine the prevalence and factors associated with heart failure according to echocardiogram in older adults treated at the Homero Castanier Crespo Hospital, during the period 2015-2019.

Methodology: an analytical-cross-sectional study was carried out, the universe was made up of the medical records of older adults treated at the Homero Castanier Crespo hospital, to whom an echocardiogram was performed, during the period 2015-2019. The sample was probabilistic and was obtained through simple randomization, giving a total of 311 medical records, only 297 records that met the inclusion criteria were analyzed, finally, the analysis was carried out with SPSS version 20 software.

Results: the prevalence of HF was 39.3. The rate of HF was higher in older adults with hypertension (p=0.000); arrhythmias (p=0.000); IMA (p=0.001) and DM2 (p=0.001); the consumption of psychoactive drugs such as tobacco showed a higher percentage of CI compared to those without consumption (p=0.002).

Conclusions: the prevalence of HF was 39.3% and it was positively associated with age ≥ 85 years, hypertension, AMI, DM2, arrhythmias, and tobacco consumption.
