Abstract
Background: Vaginal cytology is an effective method for the detection of precancerous lesions and neoplasms of the cervix, also to having a reliable specificity, and being reported internationally under the Bethesda classification. Statistical information in Ecuador about the special screening for cervical cancer is poore, so this research focuses on characterizing the results of Pap smears according to the aforementioned classification, whose results will be useful for the medical community.
Objective: To characterize the results of outpatient consultation of the Pap smear of the José Carrasco Arteaga Specialty Hospital from January 2018 to December 2019.
Methods: Retrospective descriptive study, the population was 511 patients who underwent Pap smears in the gynecological outpatient clinic of the José Carrasco Arteaga Specialty Hospital. The data was collected using a form prepared by the authors. The tabulation and analysis of the data was carried out in the statistical program called SPSS and with Microsoft Excel measuring frequencies and percentages.
Results: In the José Carrasco Arteaga Specialty Hospital between 2018 and 2019, 511 patients who underwent Pap smears, 84.54% were negative for Intraepithelial Lesion or Malignancy and the incidence of endocervical adenocarcinoma in situ was 0.20%, in addition the most frequent age group were women aged 30 years or older and married.
Conclusions: As evidenced in previous studies, the vast majority of cytological results correspond to negative for intraepithelial lesions or malignancy.
