Gallblader Cancer. Case Report

Abstract

Introduction: Gallbladder cancer is a disease that is usually diagnosed incidentally in its late stages and commonly occurs in adult women. Adenocarcinoma is the most common histological type and has a poor prognosis due to its aggressive behavior and limited treatment options.

Case report: A 58-year-old patient with abdominal pain located in the upper right quadrant, hyporexia, and weight loss accompanied by abdominal distension that appeared in recent weeks. Based on the results of the additional tests, surgical treatment was performed: IV-V non-anatomical hepatic segmentectomy + cholecystectomy + hepatoduodenal lymphadenectomy, the findings confirmed the histopathological diagnosis of gallbladder adenocarcinoma Stage: PT1A N1.

Conclusion: Gallbladder carcinoma is a rare condition with high incidence and mortality rates, particularly in the Andean countries of Latin America; due to the cases detected in the early stages are asymptomatic, and when symptoms appear, the short- and medium-term prognosis is poor. This case highlights the specific surgical and oncological approach, particularly for this disease in advanced stages, in order to improve the patient’s functional status and reducing mortality rates.
