Abstract

This investigation was carried out in Nuevo León, between November 2014 and June 2015, with the purpose of elaborating a model that assures the supplier development in large companies of Mexico. Data were collect through the relevant literature review, a questionnaire and interviews; it was possible to identify the success factors and inhibitors of the success development of suppliers of the main large companies in the automotive sector of Nuevo León; these factors help us to generate the model of this research. The analysis of the data indicate that the supplier development, in the companies participating, showed lacks a strategic focus, most companies evaluate the supplier and maintain long-term relationships with them. As a result of the research, a five-phase model is proposed: strategic planning of supplier development, supplier selection, supplier development, monitoring and results, and continuous improvement; In addition, the model contributes to those large companies that are interested in designing a supplier development with a strategic focus, and that encourages the continuous improvement of their suppliers.
