The pain of Orpheus

Resumen:

El mito de Orfeo ha sido considerado por parte de la Estética y la Historia de la Música como uno de los mitos fundacionales más importantes de la música. En este artículo vamos a centrarnos en Orfeo y la pérdida de Eurídice, el dolor que desencadena y cómo este sentimiento se traduce en música. Realizaremos, para ello, un análisis de L'Orfeo de Monteverdi y Striggio, el Orfeo ed Euridice de Gluck y Calzabigi, el Orpheus de Liszt, y el Orphée 53 de Schaeffer y Henry.

Abstract:

The myth of Orpheus has been recognized by the Aesthetics and History of music as one of the most important founding myths of music. In this article we will focus on Orfeo, on the feeling of grief at the loss of Euridice and on how is it translated into music. We will do, for this purpose, an analytical study of Monteverdi and Striggio's L'Orfeo, Gluck and Calzabigi's Orfeo ed Euridice, Liszt's Orpheus, and Schaeffer and Henry's Orphée 53.
