Abstract

The main research goal of Combo UN has been the study of popular music performance from its practice.  Through the creation of a “dance orchestra” that plays emblematic music themes of Antillean and Caribean music, professors and students of the Conservatory of Music of the National University of Colombia have built an unparalleled space that encourages creative working, commits to the expectations and interests of the students and brings together academic processes and the real requirements of the public and professional scope. This article collects reflections generated from this process, and puts forward a curricular model that includes the study and practice of traditional and popular music on its academic programs.

Keywords: Musical performance, popular music, traditional music, educational research, artistic creation.
