Conquering our space: a new attribute of monumentality in the sculpture of the 21st Century

Any creation placed in a certain space has potential for becoming a monument, that is to say, for meaningfully occupying it, finding its own placement between the rest of the present objects and living beings. In sculpture, monumentality isn´t given by the size of the piece of art, but by other aesthetic and conceptual values as the shape, attributes, and the author´s intention. This communication pretends to discover how monumentality fits in miniature and how from a simple position change a new scenography able to reach plastic elevation is brought about.
From 1900 the opening of the monolithic block has allowed to abstract the shape and activate the space creating new representations that have remained until our days. Today, the heirs of this legacy establish interesting reflections on the human dimension, its surroundings and its interactions, with expansive works that conceive sculpture as an inner energy source that projects in space.
