Andalién Bridge. Incomparable example of Penquista Art Deco. (Concepción, Chile)

The Andalién Bridge, located on the avenue and the homonymous river, it’s considered a vernacular connection between the cities of Concepción and Penco, standing out as a heritage urban element, in a sector that defines this historical access to the capital city of the Region of Bío Bío.
The road infrastructure work, authored by the engineer Enrique Curti, carried out in the language of Art Deco, is representative in Chile, during the 1930’s. Expressed in its geometrized and sinuous structure in reinforced concrete, with columns of gas lampposts, three transit routes and other architectural elements.
Currently, it suffers a serious and progressive deterioration, due to the action of time, weathering and its poor maintenance, which keep it at increasing risk and uncertain future. However, this bridge constitutes a valuable urban, architectural, historical, social and cultural identity legacy, which allow it to be part of the urban imaginary of Concepción.
