Abstract

Behind absurd and ludicrous premises, the films of Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos explore the contemporary neoliberal society. The director poses situations that at first may seem far from reality, but as soon as they are analysed more in depth, they are revealed as crude and precise criticisms of postmodern society and interpersonal relationships. This work analyses the way in which the Greek portrays the issue of language in his films. Lanthimos shows that language failed in its function of uniting people and giving meaning to the world. Consequently, in postmodern societies, feelings of loneliness, alienation, and despair are inexorably increasing.

Keywords: Yorgos Lanthimos, language, postmodernism, film, society.
