Abstract

The article takes the independent film Into the Wild (Sean Penn, 2007) as a case study, a narrative analysis is carried out that considers the characteristics, actions and transformations of the characters in the story. In the analysis, contradictions are evident around the concepts of freedom and emancipation, generating ideological gaps that have countercultural movements as a starting point. Apparently, the film exhibits a critical discourse against capitalism but it promotes a strong individualist perspective of the characters in the story. On an artistic level, the film is recognized within the context of capitalist realism, where the work is assumed as an independent production that continues to respond to logics of an industrial nature related to the reproduction of a palliative society, where individualism, cult to narcissism and the abandonment of critical and ideological positions are recognized as central elements of the analyzed film narrative.
