Abstract

This theoretical-reflective article analyzes the place occupied by traditional, folkloric, and popular Caribbean music within formal systems of higher music education. In this context, it examines the rituals that sustain these musical expressions—transmitted through orality—and problematizes curricular models dominated by Eurocentric approaches. The analysis is structured around categories such as syncretism, orality, festive practices, laughter, and myth, in dialogue with authors such as Bakhtin, Freud, Lévi-Strauss, Bartók, and Ortiz. It argues that Caribbean music constitutes a complex cultural phenomenon, shaped by historical processes of mestizaje, resistance, and oral transmission, whose recognition implies its validation as a legitimate object of knowledge in higher music education. The aim is to critically analyze its curricular positioning and to identify elements that help understand its complexity as a foundation for educational processes.
