Artificial intelligence-generated images in the genealogy of caricature

Abstract

This essay analyses imaginary scenes generated using large language model-based artificial intelligence applications to contrast them with a series of caricatures created during the heyday of this artistic genre in the early 19th century. Research into the results of automated processes producing visual representations, as well as on significant devices and expressive qualities brought into play in the caricatures, suggests the existence of a recursive and distorting structure shared by both types of images. The study proposes a genealogical relationship between these iconic fields and a review of the validity and influence of the caricature on images resulting from computer systems.
