Artificial Intelligence applied in costume design education: possibilities and limitations in the representation of characters
Abstract
In the present paper, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools for image generation in costume design is explored, focusing on the visual representation of characters. Based on a practical project in the course Design IV of the Bachelor’s Degree in Fashion and Textile Design (Universidad Siglo 21, Córdoba, Argentina), the possibilities and limitations of these technologies are analyzed, including the students’ critical perspectives. Results show that AI can facilitate the visualization of characters and their costumes, integrating them into spatial contexts with dramatic meaning. However, limitations related to reproducing technical details and the need for active interaction with these tools are noted. This experience highlights that conceptual and linguistic skills will become increasingly essential in the professional field of costume design, prompting reflection on its teaching.
