Abstract

The tension between documentary photography and fine art photography is explored, two categories that have historically been considered opposed but which in practice coexist and hybridize. Documentary photography seeks to capture reality with testimonial fidelity, while fine art photography expresses the creator’s subjective vision. However, this distinction is not absolute: since the early days of the medium, various photographers have moved between both intentionalities. A taxonomy based on three differentiating axes is proposed: the intentionality and purpose of the image, the creative process or working method, and the relationship between the image and reality. It is argued that the photographer’s intentionality constitutes the determining criterion, while recognizing the existence of zones of indeterminacy, such as fine art documentary photography, where document and expression converge. Rather than resolving the tension, the text invites us to embrace it as a richness of the photographic medium, whose duality is not a problem to be solved but a reality to be interpreted, with intentionality serving as the compass that guides the conscious viewer.
