The administrative formalization of an organization is conceived as the legal action of legalizing its presence in the market and also as the way in which its organizational processes are declared and evidenced. The objective of this cross-sectional descriptive study is to measure and describe the second type of formalization in medium-sized retail businesses (ISIC 47) in the urban parishes of the city of Quito in 2017 and if the time spent in the market affects its formalization. After applying the methodology to 58 managers of medium-sized companies, it was obtained that the general average of formalization amounts to 81.72% corresponding to the optimal scale, which indicates that although there are weak internal aspects, in general terms their processes are stable. In addition, there is no relationship between their permanence in the market and their level of formalization.
