Social Fabric: The Impact of the Mundialito de los Pobres in Cuenca
Abstract
This research aims to analyze how the sports event known as the “Mundialito de los Pobres” influences social cohesion, community relations, and the sense of identity in Cuenca, as well as its economic and cultural benefits. Utilizing a qualitative methodology based on semi-structured interviews and discourse analysis, the research reveals that the event strengthens social cohesion and the sense of belonging among neighborhoods, generates significant economic income, and preserves local traditions. However, it faces challenges related to the security of the fans and the commercialization of the sport. This phenomenon is perceived as both a tradition and a cultural event, reflecting community life and promoting social integration. The study highlights the importance of this event as a phenomenon that transcends sports, consolidating its relevance in Cuenca's society
