Abstract

This article is about the calculation of energy efficiency in steam boilers and the estimation of gaseous emissions from the production and service industries in the city of Loja. For this purpose, during the period from January to April 2015, several measurements were made of the gas components in the chimney of each boiler using a gas analyzer, and other parameters were measured such as temperature, pressure, and speed at different points of interest. Applying the indirect method, the results showed that the energy efficiency of the boilers is in an acceptable range with an average around 88%, except for a particular case that presented a low efficiency due to a defect in the insulation of the boiler, which was later corrected. Regarding emissions, the most representative parameter was NOx, which was outside the permissible limits of the Ecuadorian standard of environmental control.
