Accompanying regional development: regularising migration for development
Abstract
Development in the Ecuadorian Austro depends to a large extent on migration, which mainly takes place through irregular channels, where people have to avoid the serious dangers involved in human trafficking. Working conditions in destination countries, as well as wages, are precarious, as companies abuse the irregular status of migrants. Regularising the status of migrants through the enforceability of international agreements is of vital importance to generate opportunities from the migratory fact, and academia, with its research-intervention programmes, has a lot to contribute to this.
