Mapping Empowerment: The Case of the "Ecobarrio" in Bogotá, Colombia
Abstract
The urban growth of Bogotá (Colombia's capital) was marked by a rapid process of extensive urbanisation that took place throughout the 20th century. During this time, large numbers of internally displaced people arrived in the city, escaping the atrocities of the armed conflict. Most of these people settled on the outskirts of the city, where "vacant" land was unsuitable for urbanisation, without any infrastructure and basic services. This scenario gave way to the construction of a landscape of inequality in Bogotá, divided by the contrast between the informal neighbourhoods of the peripheries and the planned city of the elites with access to public services.
