Abstract

Introduction: heart failure (HF) is the inability to meet the body's demands, its decompensation is influenced by factors that lead to hospital readmissions, raising morbidity and mortality rates.

Objective: to determine the prevalence of readmission for heart failure and associated factors in patients over 40 years of age at the Vicente Corral Moscoso Hospital. Cuenca 2018-2020.

Methodology: cross-sectional analytical study, in 120 medical records of patients over 40 years of age, from the Internal Medicine service, with a diagnosis of heart failure who were readmitted due to decompensation, in the period 2018-2020. The information was collected in a form prepared by the authors and analyzed in the statistical program SPSS version 15 using descriptive statistics such as frequency and percentage, measures of central tendency as average, and dispersion as standard deviation and for the prevalence ratio with a confidence index of 95%, and for statistical significance, the Chi square test with its p value less than 0.05.

Results: the prevalence of readmission for heart failure was 33%, with a mean age of 72 years and a standard deviation of ±13.69; 57.5% were women, readmission was associated with pathologies such as type 2 diabetes OR 3 (95% CI, 1.16-7.73, p= 0.02), and use of medication such as antiaggregants OR 8.78 (95% CI 0.95-81.34, p = 0.02) and diuretics OR 3.16 (95% CI 1.41-7.09, p = 0.00).

Conclusions: the prevalence of readmission for heart failure was higher in elderly patients, with a predominance of the female gender, associated with type 2 diabetes and consumption of diuretics and antiaggregants.
