ABSTRACT
Introduction: The solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura is rare, slow-growing, generally with benign characteristics, it presents in 10% with malignant characteristics.
Clinical case: A 56-year-old patient with dyspnea on medium efforts that progresses to low efforts, was diagnosed with a solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura 8 years ago. He went to the thoracic surgery service again due to exacerbation of dyspnea, associated with cough, and chest pain. The radiograph and tomography revealed a voluminous mass in the left hemithorax. It was decided to intervene surgically for resection of the tumor. The patient goes to intensive care and recovered favorably.
Conclusion: Due to its large size, the tumor produced compression of neighboring structures, causing left pulmonary atelectasis; Surgical resection of the tumor was successfully performed through a left posterolateral thoracotomy.
