Introduction Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has a variable lethality due to the wide spread of the virus worldwide. It can be associated with factors such as age, sex and different comorbidities such as high blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, chronic kidney disease and obesity.
Objective: establish the prevalence of COVID-19 and factors associated with severe COVID in patients admitted to the Vicente Corral Moscoso Hospital (HVCM).
Methodology: analytical cross-sectional study in 425 patients with COVID-19 out of 1,472 admitted to hospital. Descriptive statistics such as percentage and frequency, measures of dispersion, central tendency, and to determine association, OR with 95% IC and chi square were used.
Results: Of 1,472 admitted to the hospital, 425 presented COVID-19 corresponding to 28.87%, 216 men (51%) and 209 (49%) women. Severe COVID 52.2% and comorbidities such as arterial hypertension 65.69% (p<0.01; OR 2.26 95% CI 1.48-3.45), chronic kidney disease 76.47% (p<0.01; OR 3.09 IC95% 0.99-9.65) and obesity 69.79% (p<0.01; OR 2.59 IC95% 1.59-4.21).
Conclusions: A significant prevalence of COVID-19 was observed in the HVCM, being more frequent in males. More than half of the patients presented complications, among them being an older adult and having comorbidities such as arterial hypertension, chronic kidney disease and obesity are risk factors related to severity.
