Abstract

Introduction: quality of life is closely linked to perceived well-being, and oral health is a crucial factor in this aspect. Drug dependence can have detrimental effects on oral health, contributing to the development of cavities, periodontal diseases, and tooth loss.

Objective: to assess oral health-related quality of life in drug-dependent patients and its association with cavities, periodontal disease, and oral hygiene levels.

Methodology: a cross-sectional analytical study was conducted with 84 patients from the Humberto Camacho Addiction Rehabilitation Center. Sociodemographic data were collected, and the OHIP-14 survey was used to evaluate quality of life. An intraoral clinical examination was performed, and data were analyzed using SPSS software, applying descriptive and analytical statistical tests, including the Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal-Wallis test.

Results: a high prevalence of cavities and gingival bleeding was observed, with a significant impact on the patients' psychological discomfort and social disability. Gingival bleeding was significantly associated with physical pain (p<0,05) and psychological discomfort (p=0,031). Significant differences were found in psychological discomfort (p=0,041) and social disability (p=0,020) related to oral health levels.

Conclusions: deteriorated oral health in drug-dependent patients, characterized by cavities and gingival bleeding, negatively impacts their overall well-being, particularly in terms of psychological discomfort and social disability.
