Queratoquiste odontogénico: ¿tumor o quiste? Revisión de la literatura

Resumen

El queratoquiste odontogénico (OKC), descrito inicialmente como un quiste de desarrollo originado de la lámina dental o sus remanentes, ha experimentado cambios en su terminología y clasificación debido a variaciones clínicas y descubrimientos genéticos. Aunque se propuso como una neoplasia benigna en 1967, evidencia reciente lo clasifica nuevamente como queratoquiste odontogénico en la edición de la OMS de 2017. El objetivo de este análisis es evaluar la evidencia actual sobre el OKC considerando aspectos radiográficos, clínicos, histopatológicos y moleculares para determinar su naturaleza. Se revisaron 19 artículos obtenidos de bases de datos como PubMed, Scopus, SciELO y ScienceDirect, los cuales abordaron características como recurrencia, manifestaciones clínicas, hallazgos radiográficos, actualizaciones de la OMS, influencia genética, expresión de marcadores y comparaciones con otros quistes o tumores odontogénicos. Los hallazgos sugieren que el OKC es una patología incierta, ya que la controversia sobre su clasificación como quiste o neoplasia permanece sin resolución definitiva.
