Abstract

Introduction: Periodontal disease affects a large percentage of the Chilean population; therefore, future healthcare professionals must be able to recognize it, understand the associated risk factors, and make the necessary referrals. Objective: To determine the level of knowledge about periodontal health and disease among healthcare students in Valparaíso, Chile. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional design was used in a convenient sample of 90 healthcare students from two universities in the Valparaíso, Chile area. The validated instrument used was the "Knowledge Questionnaire on the Relationship between Periodontal Disease and Systemic Diseases" (CEPES). Statistical analysis was performed using Stata software. Results: The mean score of the study sample was 3.17.  This group appears to have low knowledge, with only 35% correct answers. This percentage is equivalent to a score of 2.8 on a scale of 1 to 7. Discussion: There is an urgent need to incorporate aspects related to oral and periodontal health into health program curricula, due to poor results compared to international research. Conclusion: Health students have a low level of knowledge about periodontal health and disease. This suggests that these contents may be missing from current curricula.
