Tonal micro and macrostructure in Salgado’s Second piano sonata

This paper presents a multidisciplinary exploration of Luis Humberto Salgado’s Second piano sonata. Quantitative data were extracted through the computerised analysis of both the score and the recorded performance of this sonata; later, these data were analysed and visualised employing a number of statistical methods. Principal among the findings of this study is the correlation between tonal complexity and tempo in the first two movements, which suggest its use as an expressive device; while the third movement displays great tonal diversity, it is not associated with greater expressivity. The methods applied during this research may be generalised for the study of other pieces by Salgado and other composers.
Keywords: Luis Humberto Salgado, computerised analysis, piano sonata, tonal structure, performance analysis.
