OCR: Soundscape Design through Text
Abstract
This work explores the relationship between text and sound through the sonification of letters and words using technologies such as Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and MIDI notation. By designing experimental instruments, texts were transformed into sound compositions, creating a soundscape that challenges traditional linguistic conventions. The work was presented in two different instances, demonstrating its versatility for applying the process to various texts. Inspired by Avraamov’s demands for creating instruments with social significance, the piece generates a real-time sensory experience where writing and sound coexist. Additionally, the notions of performance and performativity are explored, allowing the analysis of both the technical process and the unique nature of each presentation. This research-creation project contributes to new ways of experiencing written language, resignifying its content and expanding the possibilities of sound art through technology.
