Artistic practices in the community: Transformative experiences that foster interculturality and the exercise of cultural rights

Abstract

Artistic practices, considered in many cases in society as complementary activities for the use of free time, now mean for communities or human groups settled in marginal or peripheral urban territories, the possibility of experimenting with new symbolic languages that serve as a means or instrument for the expression and communication of the daily life of human groups that inhabit these territories. From the implementation and intentional development of these artistic practices with groups of students and teachers of the University of the Arts within the framework of community projects of linkage with society, they reveal processes of interlearning, interculturality and exercise of cultural rights of vulnerable groups in the city of Guayaquil. The visual impacts as testimonials of the intervened sector located in the area of Isla Trinitaria, which is home to a majority Afro-Ecuadorian population, are an example of the potential of artistic practices to generate meeting spaces, interlearning processes between higher education and the community, as well as the possibility of promoting intercultural coexistence with the presence and social relationship of different and diverse actors of society that meet in the Territory opening an opportunity to resume and renew the social relations of the community with external actors in the midst of an escalation of violence and insecurity in recent years.
