The Far Right in Ecuador: The Whisper of Something Deep Within

This article analyzes the emergence of far-right discourses in contemporary Ecuador through an interpretive discourse analysis grounded in a historical-hermeneutic approach. Its objective is to identify continuities between the discursive logics of twentieth-century European totalitarianism and certain communicational practices present in three Ecuadorian political conjunctures: the government of León Febres Cordero, the national strike of October 2019, and events that occurred during the administration of Daniel Noboa.
Methodologically, the study is developed as a qualitative analysis of discursive scenes constructed from journalistic sources, official statements, and publicly available records, examined through analytical categories derived from Arendt, Schmitt, and Benjamin. The findings reveal the recurrence of strategies aimed at constructing the internal enemy, the symbolic legitimation of violence, and the aestheticization of politics. The article concludes that these patterns help to explain the contemporary rise of radical right-wing politics in Ecuador within a broader context of democratic legitimacy crisis.
