Professor-researcher of public health and sociology, co-director of the Health and Nutrition Research Institute and president of the Human Series Research Ethics Committee of the San Francisco de Quito University (USFQ). He received his master's and doctoral degrees from Cornell University. Between 1988 and 1994, he was a founding professor of the USFQ and Dean of the School of Management for Development and Social Sciences and Humanities. Between 1994 and 2005, he was Associate Professor of Global Health and International Affairs at the George Washington University in Washington, DC. He returned to the USFQ in 2005. He has more than 30 years of professional experience in teaching and research, more than 20 of them in Ecuador. He has published approximately 10 books and 50 scientific articles. His research areas include the social determinants of health, socio-economic development and intercultural health. He works on the design, execution, management, monitoring and evaluation of health and development projects and the use of quantitative and qualitative methods in research. He has provided professional services to national and international organizations in Latin America, the Caribbean, North America, Europe and Africa.
