In 2012, within the departmental project “ICT as a resource in research for the humanities” arose the research “The hypertextual essay as possibility of expression and tool in digital spaces”, of the research group Speeches Social and Communication, belonging to the Humanities Department at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Azcapotzalco, Mexico City. During the discussions that our research group had, since the beginning of this project, we have studied the notion of essay at different levels, which has led us to wonder about essay writing at the university level and the facilities and peculiarities gives the hypertext space for its production. In this paper, I want to reflect on the consideration of the essay as gender -being aware of the taxonomic difficulties of the genre-, from the definitions proposed by Mikhail Bakhtin for discursive genres and digital tools or resources used in its construction. For the latter, I will draw on the theoretical foundations of hypertext proposed by specialists of the caliber of George Landow and Yuri Lotman, among others.
