This article aims to establish some theoretical framework for discussion of morality on immigration issues. This research joins a literature review of the moral arguments for borders regulation and an empirical analysis of the legal and socio-cultural context of Colombian refugees in Cuenca, Ecuador. There are three main conclusions: 1) Moral realism is a tool for making judgments based on facts rather than on prejudices, 2) The right to exclusion and selection criteria should be carefully established in the national legislation, looking for being as least restrictive as possible and, 3) In order to address the problem of harmonious living with the 'other', it is important to understand the difference between moral rules that may apply for public and private spheres.
