Edgar Allan Poe’s works stand out for their narrative and the creation of atmospheres where the symbol transcends the literary to configure psychological horror. The present study analyzes the signs associated with the cat in the horror short story “The Black Cat” by Edgar Allan Poe to determine how its evolution manufactures terror and presents guilt in the narrator. The methodology followed a qualitative approach within the literary field, of a semiotic-hermeneutic nature, based on Roland Barthes’ theoretical framework regarding signifying levels (functional, actions, and narration). Seven signs were selected—the name Pluto, the black color, the eye mutilation, the hanging, the double cat, the white patch, and the final scream—analyzed through matrices focused on Barthesian theory. It was concluded that the signs function as a semiotic chain reflecting guilt through the narrator’s mind, transforming the feline from an observer into a tangible accuser. Poe’s terror is built through the structuring of signs that evolve from the symbolic to the perceptible, as each sign is a gear in a mechanized system leading to the fateful denouement.
