Abstract

This article reflects on Eduardo Lalo’s novel Simone (2013) through the problem of fragmentary writing and its capacity to challenge national cultural and literary archives. Within the context of contemporary Latin American narratives shaped by migrancy, marginality, and the precarization of the intellectual field, the study analyzes how the fragment, decontextualized quotation, collage, and pastiche operate as formal and political strategies. The article adopts an essayistic methodology based on critical reading and textual analysis, engaging with theoretical contributions from cultural and literary studies on archive, border, and dislocation. Focusing on the relationship between the narrator and the character Li Chao, the analysis examines how marginal writing—inscribed in graffiti, disposable papers, and borrowed texts—erodes the coherence of the canonical archive and exposes its mechanisms of exclusion. It is argued, in conclusion, that Simone articulates a poetics of ruin and residue that desacralizes the literary field, subverts the mercantile logic of knowledge, and reclaims fragmentation as a legitimate mode of critical production from the margins.
