The support crisis: the beginnings of objectuality in Chile

In the mid-1950s, abstract geometric painting put pictorial illusionism in crisis, rethinking the modes of production and reflection within Chilean art. During the 60s, geometric abstraction was stressed by the emergence of a type of abstraction of an expressive and gestural nature which integrated reality to the pictorial surface. The influence of these groups favored the appearance of an object art that responded to the political context and to an experimental desire that went beyond the limits of painting and sculpture. Through this article, we seek to answer the question: what are the antecedents that marked the emergence of objectuality in our context? Through a methodology focused on the critical analysis of documents and works, we address the crisis of the representational model and how this crisis impacts the local art scene, renewing discourses and the artistic practice itself.
