Recientes avances en la clasificación de explosiones de rayos gamma cortas en astrofísica

Las explosiones de rayos gamma (también conocidas como GRBs por sus siglas en inglés: Gamma-ray Bursts) han sido un enigma desde su descubrimiento hace más de 40 años. Son los eventos explosivos más energéticos del universo después del Big Bang y se dan a distancias cosmológicas. El presente artículo explora el conocimiento alcanzado sobre estos fenómenos astrofísicos, en la última década, ya que se ha logrado un gran avance en el entendimiento y esclarecimiento de algunos de sus procesos físicos intrínsecos, gracias a los adelantos teóricos, observacionales y de instrumentación. Investigaciones recientes proponen la existencia de al menos un nuevo tipo de GRB, lo cual modificaría la concepción, que en la actualidad tenemos sobre su clasificación y la asignación de sus progenitores.
