Attitudes and perceptions of older adults about their sexuality

The objective of this research was to identify perceptions (prejudices, myths, limitations, and attitudes) that older adults have about their sexuality. For this purpose, in 2018 data were obtained through a survey conducted on a study universe comprising older adults who are part of the Universidad del Adulto Mayor program in Cuenca, province Azuay. For the data collection a quantitative, exploratory, and transversal research methodology was developed. The questionnaire “Actitudes hacia la sexualidad en la vejez” developed by Orozco and Rodríguez (2006) was applied. On the basis of a tabulation process and the presentation of statistical charts, it was possible to determine, among the most important findings, that 61.9% of older adults who were part of the study shows positive attitudes toward sexuality considering myths, perceptions, and limitations below the average quantities in most cases. The results presented in this research provide updated data about sexual behavior in an older population, which potentially supports future investigations about this specific subject.
