Abstract

The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a non-enveloped virus transmitted through direct contact, placental cells, blood, and autoinoculation. It can cause benign or malignant lesions in the genital and oropharyngeal areas, depending on its variant. Prophylactic vaccines have been developed to prevent these pathologies, although their effectiveness in the oral region remains a subject of debate. This article explores the implications of HPV in dentistry, focusing on transmission pathways, associated pathologies, the risk of malignant transformation, and prevention strategies. A literature review was conducted using databases such as Scopus, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, and ProQuest, focusing on publications from the last five years. A total of 38 articles were selected, demonstrating that HPV is directly responsible for the development of benign and malignant lesions in the oropharyngeal region, depending on the variant. Furthermore, vaccination is highlighted as a key strategy for preventing cervical and oropharyngeal cancer.
