Abstract. This research explores the material, associative and content resources to wich El Iris, publicación literaria, científica y noticiosa (Quito: 1861-1862), appealed to succeed in the face of the difficulties of its editorial context and to promote an intellectual community that in the post-crisis of 1859 wanted to be seen as an enlightened cultural elite. It is an inquiry that has the press as its object of study and seeks to place at the center of the analysis the resources to which they appealed to advertisers, a condition that allows recognizing the publishing, advertising and print world as a space in which individuals and groups act and experiment to meet their goals despite the difficulties.
