In this essay, I engage, from a personal perspective, with Ana Buriano’s trajectory, as head librarian at the Instituto Mora and as a historian of Conservatism. I briefly review some of the central contributions of the important book, Navegando en la borrasca. Construir la nación de la fe en el mundo de la impiedad. Ecuador, 1860-1875, which renewed our conversations on the history of political ideas and of Church-State relationship in Latin America: her analysis of how ideas and action interacted, and her weighing the influence of models, connections and networks in the continent’s historical processes.
