Traslatio: study and dissemination of maritime heritage

Abstract

The Traslatio project develops research on the southern estuary of Muros-Noia and the northern estuary of Arousa in Galicia, Spain. The aim is to enhance the maritime architectural heritage of both estuaries through the systematic study of buildings associated with small-scale traditional maritime industries, such as salting factories, canneries, traditional shipyards, shellfish farms, whaling factories and ancillary buildings. Following the inventory of the constructions, participatory and dissemination activities are developed with the objective of disseminating knowledge to visitors and pilgrims who travel the sea routes to Santiago de Compostela, engaging with local population and fostering intergenerational dialogue and the transmission of this heritage that represents the identity of the Galician coast.

Author Biographies

Oscar Fuertes Dopico, Universidade da Coruña, España

(Ferrol, 1983) Doctorate in Architectural Studies, educated at ETSAC and AA Mendrisio, obtained the Extraordinary PhD award. His PhD is published by Xunta de Galicia and awarded at the XIV Spanish Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism (BEAU). Since 2019 he combines teaching as Associate Professor in the Department of Architectural Projects, Urban Planning and Composition at the University of A Coruña, with his professional work as a partner in Fuertespenedo studio, where he has won awards such as: XIV BEAU 2023 Award, XV BEAU 2021 Award, Young European Architects 2020 Award, Rehabilitation Prize in XIX COAG Awards (2021) or FAD2019 Finalists, among others. His research is focused on maritime heritage, participating as coordinator of different regional and international projects. His research production ranges from the publication of articles and participation in conferences in Spain, Portugal and the United Kingdom. He is currently directing the Plan for Maritime Culture in Galicia.

Iago Fernandez Penedo, Independent researcher, Spain

(Vigo, 1983) is an architect from ETSAM (2009). He holds a Postgraduate Degree in Design and Technology of Industrial Housing, Madrid, ETSAM (2010); International Wood Program, Aalto University, Espoo, Finland (2013), and Master in Structural Wood Engineering, Lugo, USC (2014). Since 2015, together with Óscar Fuertes, he has been part of Fuertespenedo architects, an architectural studio devoted to design, research and architecture. He has written the article “Industrial heritage in the Context of Sustainability.” for the VII Congress on the Conservation of Industrial Heritage and Public Works in Spain and the article “The architectures of the sea trades.” For Table 2. Strategies for territorial regeneration. He has received: XVI Spanish Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism Award (2023), XV Spanish Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism Award (2021), Young European Architects Award (2020), Rehabilitation Prize in XIX COAG Awards (2021), Finalists VIII Enor Awards (2020) and FAD2019 Awards Finalists.

Carmen Fabregat-Nodar, Universidade da Coruña, España

(Ferrol, 1984) is an architect graduated from ETSAC University of A Coruña in 2009 and completed her training as an exchange student at Facoltà di Architettura, Politecnico di Torino. In 2015 she completed her Degree in Sociology at UNED. She has participated in research projects on maritime heritage: "Study of the coastal line from Broña to Barquiña", Xunta de Galicia, 2018; "Traslatio: the maritime heritage of the ways from the sea to Santiago". Xunta de Galicia (Xacobeo 21-22), 2020-2021, selected project XVI BEAU. She has developed participatory and collaborative design projects: "O Noso Patio", awarded in IX UNICEF Good Practices in The Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI), winner of the I International Biennial of Architecture Education for Children and Youth and published in Ludantia: I International Biennial of Education in Architecture for Childhood and Youth (2018). Since 2023 she is a researcher at University of A Coruña.
