The figure of the cannibal, ambiguously combined with the noble savage, has been widely used by different discourse genres - Indian chronicles, travelogues, ethnographic discourse-as a privileged trope for the symbolic construction of the “barbarian”. The novel by Juan Saer, El entenado, takes up the cause of cannibalism and engages in a contentious dialogue with those speeches, which has caused to be read as a historical novel. This paper explores Saer’s novel, not from the perspective of a reconstruction of historical truth, but from the legitimacy of the concept of “fiction” as interpretive reconstruction of reality, and the role of memory files, and anchors the present.
