Territorial stigma is a phenomenon that responds to the stereotype of a specific place and is associated with discrimination and loss of status. This phenomenon is also associated with the decline in the social capital of the stigmatized population, and the clustering of neighborhoods sharing similar socioeconomic disadvantages. We studied a peripherical neighborhood of the city of Cuenca in Ecuador applying qualitative and quantitative approaches (interviews, focus groups, regression models). Our results showed that territorial stigma is associated with the social isolation of the stigmatized neighborhood, and the residential segregation of the neighborhood influence accessibility to job opportunities, which amplifies the existent socioeconomic deprivation.
