Impacto al nivel de servicio de rotondas en Cuenca, producto de cambios geométricos

Abstract

Ecuador still does not possess technical design guidelines for roundabouts in line with the latest international standards. The current norm uses concepts for geometric parameters and capacity calculation that were discarded in the United States and Europe in the 60s. This situation led to the construction of heterogeneous roundabouts that generally have limitations in operational performance and/or safety issues. This paper presents the comparison of five well-regarded guidelines or manuals of geometric design for roundabouts in urban areas. The geometric design parameters that are used as a measure to decrease and homogenize vehicle speeds, and their impact on the level of service and capacity are analyzed. Based on the conducted analysis two city intersections were redesigned. The new solutions provided an improvement of 60 to 90% of the geometric design parameters according to internationally accepted standards. Circulation speeds are potentially reduced through, namely the increase of deflection. In terms of capacity there should be a small increase that consequently reduced the delays, thus slightly improving the level of service. Therefore, and in resume, the geometric design proposed parameters and redesigns should reduce the risk and severity of accidents without negatively affecting the current operational characteristics.
