Butler matrix is a method of beamforming array antenna. Our objective was designing and implementing a laboratory prototype of a 4x4 matrix, using microstrip technology. Theoretical conditions for a Butler matrix are established to satisfy the requirements of a beam switching antenna, then the theoretical basis of microwave circuits that compose it is described. Each circuit element is designed, optimized and simulated with a software tool; after being manufactured its functional parameters are verified. With proven designs, they are integrated in a single circuit to form the matrix. The complete design is again simulated and optimized before manufacturing. The performance of the components and the matrix was verified with a vector network analyzer, and their divergence was analyzed with the objective parameters.
